The National Enterprise Support Awards are organised by the Commerce Department and the Enterprise Policy Directorate and Schemes within the Ministry for the Economy, Investment and Small Business. These Awards are not just a competition but are intended to foster more awareness of the importance of entrepreneurship both on a local and on a national level.
The Maria Regina College Dun Manwel Attard Young Adult Education Resource Centre presented the in-house sheltered workshop initiative in the category: Responsible and inclusive entrepreneurship. Such category recognises national and local initiatives by authorities or public/private partnerships that promote corporate social responsibility among small and medium sized enterprises. This category will also recognise efforts to promote entrepreneurship among disadvantaged groups such as the unemployed, especially long term unemployed, legal migrants, people with disability or people from ethnic minorities.
Our Centre was awarded this prestigious award for the first time. Like other initiatives in our Centre this award certifies the coherence of our Centre Policies with the actual Government Social and Economical policies vis-a-vis people with disabilities.
Four EkoSkola members attended the Green Flag and LEAF ceremony at The Palace, Valletta. The Centre achieved the Green Flag and the LEAF Award for the second consecutive time. Also, one of our students opened such ceremony with a speech about the students’ experience with LEAF project. We would like to thank all of the staff and students involved in such projects.
On Friday 3rd June four students attended the Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) ceremony. All students who participated in this project were awarded a certificate during the Awards Ceremony. Three of the students present during the ceremony obtained the Finalists Award. The photo chosen by a national jury, for the Best Entries in the age category 19 – 21 years was “Eating others’ leftovers” taken by Sefora Apap. This photo was sent to the international jury for classification.
A number of entities have chosen their best entries too and the list below shows the results:
The photo chosen for the Solidarity Award, was “Behind bars” taken by James Cachia;
The photo chosen for The HSBC WaterProgramme – Catch the Drop Campaign Award was “Saving water” taken by Aurelia Zammit;
The photo chosen for the We Eat Responsibly Award was “Foreign vs Local” taken by Ryan Borg.
These entities have given a total of €300 to our Resource Centre which will be used to buy material for students related to photography.
Two students from the EkoSkola team attended a Parliamentary Session where students from various colleges had the opportunity to present a number of motions to the President (speaker). High dignities were present. The Prime Minister of Malta, the Opposition leader together with the Ministers and other Members of Parliament responded and provided fruitful information to all the students present. Such an experience strengthened their knowledge about the subject where along this scholastic year, during various activities, students have become more aware about their environment and the responsibilities one needs to shoulder in order to help care for the environment.
On Tuesday, 31st May, 2016 the School Council together with the staff and the EkoSkola team organised a Waste-Free BBQ at our Centre in Ħamrun. Since we have worked very hard to improve our impact on the environment non disposable items were used for this event.
Similar to last year, this BBQ was being organised instead of the token that the students were usually given on Celebration Day. Thus this activity, sponsored by the School Council, was free of charge for the studen…ts. Food included a starter, chicken burger, potatoes, bread, beans, ice-cream and water. Before the BBQ students, staff and parents participated in a Dance Session by Sandra Mifsud and Douglas. Mr Neville Ebejer from PARKS delivered a talk about fostering plants. Parents also were given Holm Oak plants to be taken care of during the hot summer months. Well done to all involved.
