The sponsored marathon walk that is annually organized by the Council, was held on Friday, April 29th, in a splendid spell of fine weather. Students had also collected funds and sponsors prior to the walk.

All students, together with staff members, departed for St. Martin’s grotto at around 10a.m. and walked around the surrounding Wardija countryside for about an hour. Holy Mass was celebrated in the grotto by Fr. D. Bellizzi and was animated with various hymns.

After Mass, the ‘Award for Kindness’, that has now been established in the calendar of events, followed. This year, Alison Bugeja of Group C2 was rewarded for her kindness and good deeds. Ms. C. Barbara, her group teacher mentioned the salient positive points that led to her achievement. Accompanied by the Council’s President, Ms. M-V Farrugia, the Head of the Resource Centre, Mr. A. Galea, and her parents, the student was then presented with a commemorative certificate and donated an award by her group staff.

All students walked back to the Centre after this presentation.

One day Retreat at Savio College

On Tuesday, April 19th, all students of our Resource Centre attended for a one day retreat at Savio College in Dingli. The day started off with the celebration of Holy Mass by Fr. Donald Bellizzi. The live-in students presented some of their work performed during their live-in stay, and a spiritual session, aided by visuals, ensued thanks to Fr. Bellizzi.

After lunch, the day continued with fun games for all at the huge multi-purpose arena situated at the college. Other students preferred to stay outdoors and play basketball. The last day of the Second term was brought to an end with a speech by the Head of the Resource Centre, Mr. A. Galea.

Live-In at Savio College Dingli

On Monday, April 18th, several students from our Resource Centre attended for a live-in that was held for the third consecutive year. This time, the venue chosen for the live-in was Savio College in Dingli. The live-in was carefully planned and co-ordinated by Mr. S. Cutajar with exceptional collaboration from Ms. L. Attard, Ms. J. Schembri, Ms. S. Schembri, Mr. N. Camilleri and Mr. R. Barun.

The students arrived at Savio College by 10.30a.m. and the programme was followed. It entailed informative and development sessions, dining and cleaning up, recreational periods, games, a walk, visit to a local exhibition, showering, spiritual exercises/ prayers and a small party to finish off the first day.

On the second day, Tuesday 19th April, the rest of the Centre’s students attended for the one day retreat and Holy Mass was celebrated.

Our Lady of Sorrows Mass

On Friday, April 15th, the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows was commemorated with Holy Mass celebrated in the Centre’s Main Hall in collaboration with Stella Maris Primary School, Balzan. Fr. Joe celebrated Mass and students from both Stella Maris School and Wardija Resource Centre participated in the homily. This Mass was also a celebration of diversity, harmony, and a very good example of embracing inclusion in our educational settings.

After Mass, the Wardija students participated in a procession held around the school’s premises. During the procession, our students and the staff recited various prayers and sang together. Some students also presented flowers to Our Lady near each of the seven Holy crosses erected around the premises.

His Excellency Dr.George Abela, President of Malta visited our Resource Centre on April 14th accompanied by Mr. M Testa (College Principal), Dr. G Borg (Director Special & Inclusive Network), Ms. M Vella (Service Manager Special & Inclusive Network) as well as Mr. A Galea (Head of Resource Centre).

His visit started from the foyer where he first met the members of the Council. He later proceeded to the newly functional and refurbished Vocational Units where he met students working with their teachers aided by specialised LSAs. The President was impressed with the work produced by our students and in fact his visit lasted much longer than planned.

Dr. George Abela also visited the Centre’s renowned ‘Holy Week Exhibition’ that each year attracts visitors and many school children. Before leaving the premises, he addressed our delighted students in the Centre’s main reception area and thanked them for making his visit an enjoyable and wonderful experience. A healthy food hamper, pencil drawing and a vase of flowers made of papercraft (all students’ work) were presented to the President who was overjoyed. In turn, he also donated books to the Centre. Students were also given the unique opportunity to take pictures next to the Maltese President.

On Tuesday, April 12th, Ms. Anne Agius and Ms. Carmen Scerri from the WE FUND committee that was set up on behalf of PlayMobil Malta Ltd. employees, presented a donation of €10,000 to our Resource Centre.

Mr. A Galea (Head of the Wardija Resource Centre) accepted the donation and thanked PlayMobil Malta on behalf of the students at the Centre, for their initiative to set up a fund that assists persons in need of a deserving cause. Our students will be benefiting from this money which will be adequately used to complete and furnish the centre’s Multi-Sensory Studio.

Holy Week Exhibition 2011

The Young Adult Education Resource Centre in Wardija is once again hosting its annual ‘Holy Week Exhibition’ being held during this period of contemplation about the Passion of our Saviour Jesus Christ, just before Easter is celebrated by the Christian Church.

Each year, new depictions are inserted to enhance the quality of such exhibition that is put up by specialised staff members, with great help and enthusiasm from our students. Exhibits include the Last Supper table, Jewish food during the Last Supper, Rice plates, the Tomb as well as statuettes displaying the last moments before Jesus Christ died on the Holy cross. The Daily Living Area has also been transformed into a devotion area in which the sepulchre is exposed. 

Today, April 6th, the exhibiton was inaugurated by the Head of the Resource Centre and 120 children from Żabbar Primary school attended. The President of Malta, the Hon. Dr. George Abela will be also visiting this exhibition on April 14th. It is encouraged to pay a visit to this unique exposition that involved several weeks of work and preparation by those involved. The exhibition is open during school hours, everyday till Friday, April 15th 2011 and those interested in visiting should make contact with the Resource Centre administration.
